Unhappy with existing animal feed, farmer and Symprove Ltd founder Barry Smith developed his own feed based on germinated grains - a form of probiotic. After witnessing the impact of this on his animals, Barry realised this could improve the wellbeing of humans. The seeds of Symprove were sown.
Based around a barley, a natural grain which has undergone fermentation, Symprove (known as Multigerm at the time) becomes available on the agricultural market and is found to have a positive effect on a range of animals. Two leading vets encourage its use in humans.
Backed with funding for clinical research into human health and food supplements, the formula is refined for human use and Symprove was born.
Following a period of research and clinical studies, Symprove is launched as a food supplement, available to the public for the first time.
Symprove’s production and bottling facilities in Farnham, Surrey – where every bottle of Symprove has ever been made - are upgraded to meet growing demand.
Research is undertaken by the University College of London. They find that Symprove withstands all three phases of their testing – arrival in the gut, survival and the ability to thrive.
Using a Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbioal Ecosystem (SHIME), research confirms the live bacteria in Symprove is able to arrive, survive and thrive in the gut, as well as providing greater insight into how Symprove is able to influence and support the gut microbiome.
Barry founded what was to become Symprove Ltd over 30 years ago after noticing a significant difference in the health of his cattle when fed grain treated with bacteria. After leading vets suggested the product could have benefits for humans, Barry led a research and development programme to produce a formula suitable for human consumption. The resulting food supplement became Symprove, which was launched as brand in 2010. Clinical research by leading academic bodies, including University College London and King’s College Hospital, London, has proven that Symprove arrives, survives and thrives in the gut, improving the balance of the gut microbiome. Barry is an expert in using food technology to manage wellbeing. He has previously run his own market garden business and was a medic in the British Army.
Mike joined Symprove as CEO in 2010 and has been leading the company’s growth from research and development to full commercial production. He has driven the use of e-commerce, consumer engagement and clinical data. Mike has over 25 years’ experience in leading change and growth in rapidly evolving and complex business environments. Prior to Symprove, he spent over 20 years at Nokia working in a number of senior executive positions including VP of Consumer Services Delivery and Director of Global Business Development.
Having been an early investor in the business, Andy joined Symprove as Development Director in 2011 with a remit to build sector engagement and profile as well as sales and marketing capability. Andy has over 25 years’ experience in marketing and management within the health and wellness industry within a variety of pharmaceutical organisations including Johnson & Johnson (where he was VP of Northern European operations) and Pfizer. Andy has an MA in Marketing from Liverpool University.
Cathy joined the Symprove team in May 2018 and has developed a marketing structure and digital marketing strategy focusing on the acquisition of online customers, retention of existing customers and online sales analytics. With strong experience in digital marketing and e-commerce, she has brought a user-focused approach to the business and an improved customer experience, resulting in significant online sales growth. With a BBS(Hons) in Business Studies from Trinity College, Dublin, Cathy brings extensive consumer healthcare experience, having spent eight years in senior marketing roles at Sanofi Consumer Healthcare and, prior to that, working in pharmaceutical product management.
